The short answer
Extra View needs a physical coax cable to each decoder, so there is no wireless version. You can often reuse existing coax in the walls, run cable through the ceiling, or use neat surface trunking instead of drilling. If cabling isn’t possible, streaming is the fallback.
Each Extra View decoder receives the satellite signal through its own cable from the dish’s LNB. Wi-Fi can’t carry that signal, so a wireless link isn’t an option. That is why the question is really about cable routes, not about the decoder.
Many homes already have coax cables in the walls from older aerial or DStv installations. Sometimes they can be reused for Extra View.
The best route depends on your home. An installer can walk through and suggest the cleanest one.
Rules vary. Read our guide to dishes in complexes, estates and rentals and Smart LNBs in complexes before you plan cabling.
Streaming is the fallback. An Apple TV or smart TV can give you apps in the second room without any satellite cable. See our Apple TV installations, and check your Wi-Fi first with our buffering guide.
No. Extra View decoders need a cable connection from the LNB.
It is a trip hazard and gets damaged, so we avoid it. Trunking is neater and safer.
Sometimes. It has to be the right type and in good condition, and an installer should test it.
Good trunking can be fixed with minimal marks. Ask your installer what suits your walls.
Yes. Get your landlord’s written consent first.
