How Many Decoders Can I Connect With DStv Extra View, and Which Ones?

By the Remtech Installers team · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer

Installer guides report that Extra View supports up to three decoders on one account, with an Explora as the primary decoder. Compatibility depends on your models, so confirm your combination with DStv before you buy anything. Each decoder also needs its own signal path, which usually means a Smart LNB or the right cabling.

The rules in plain English

  • One account. All decoders share one DStv subscription.
  • One primary, the rest secondary. Installer guides say the primary should be an Explora.
  • Compatible models only. Not every decoder works as a secondary. Confirm with DStv.
  • Their own signal path. Each decoder needs its own cable from the LNB.
  • A separate monthly fee for extra decoders. Check the current amount with DStv.

Cable and LNB requirements

Most Extra View installations in single dwellings use a Smart LNB, which lets several decoders share one dish over UniCable outputs. Unused outputs should be terminated. If your dish is old or damaged, it may need replacing first. Our guide to the Smart LNB explains the part in detail.

When Extra View isn’t possible

In a complex or apartment, the building’s system decides what you can do, and DStv says the Smart LNB isn’t suitable there. Read our complex guide before you buy equipment.

RoomRoleWhat it needs
LoungePrimary ExploraA cable from the LNB and the main TV
Main bedroomSecondary decoderIts own cable run from the LNB
Study or kids’ roomSecondary decoderIts own cable run, routed through the ceiling or trunking

Each room needs a neat cable route from the dish, which is why planning the cabling matters more than the decoders.

What it costs

Costs depend on the decoders, the cable distance and whether your LNB needs upgrading. Read our 2026 cost guide for typical ranges, then ask us for a quote on your own home. See our Extra View installations, including Sandton, Fourways, Bedfordview and Centurion.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the models. Check with DStv, and ask your installer to confirm before you buy.

Each decoder has its own smartcard linked to your account.

Yes, that is the point of Extra View, as long as the decoders are linked and each has a signal path.

Ask DStv. Its terms decide what is allowed.

Often not, but the dish and LNB must suit the number of decoders. We check on site.
