Is DStv Extra View Worth It? Extra View vs a Second Subscription vs Streaming

By the Remtech Installers team · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer

Extra View is worth it when several people want to watch different channels at the same time and you already have a decoder in the lounge. Light viewers may do better with streaming alone. Compare the monthly fee, installation and your data costs, and check current DStv prices, because they change.

The three options side by side

OptionWho it suitsWatch out for
Extra ViewHouseholds that want different channels in more than one room, and live sportA monthly fee for the extra decoder, plus cabling and installation
A second DStv subscriptionA separate household or a granny flat with its own accountYou pay for a full second subscription
Streaming apps onlyLight viewers and people with a good, uncapped internet lineData use, the cost of several apps, and no signal when the internet or router is down

Work out the real running cost

Don’t compare monthly fees alone. Add up a full year.

  1. One-off costs: the extra decoder (if you need one) and the installation. See our 2026 cost guide.
  2. Monthly costs: the Extra View fee, or the second subscription, or your streaming plans.
  3. Data costs: streaming uses data, so include any extra data you buy.
  4. Multiply monthly costs by twelve and add the one-off costs.

Prices change, so use the current ones from DStv and your streaming providers.

Which one fits your household?

  • Teenagers who want their own channels: Extra View is often the simplest solution.
  • A flat-share with separate rooms: a second subscription may keep bills fair.
  • A granny flat or cottage: ask DStv about its rules for the same household.
  • Only one person watches in a second room, now and then: streaming may be enough.

Satellite versus streaming in South Africa

Satellite keeps working when the internet doesn’t, uses no data, and carries live channels reliably. Streaming is flexible and needs no dish, but it depends on your line, your data and your router, and it stops when load shedding takes the router down. See why Apple TV buffers for what weak Wi-Fi does to streaming.

Costs people forget

  • Cabling to the second room, especially in a finished house.
  • A Smart LNB upgrade if your current LNB can’t serve another decoder. See what a Smart LNB is.
  • A newer primary decoder, because installer guides say the primary should be an Explora.
  • Surge protection for the extra equipment.

A quick way to decide

  1. Do you already have an Explora? If not, factor in that cost.
  2. How many hours a week will the second room watch?
  3. Is your internet reliable and uncapped?
  4. Is a cable route available to the second room? See adding Extra View without drilling.
  5. Get a quote for the Extra View option and compare it with your alternative.

Frequently asked questions

It is designed to be, but compare current prices on DStv’s website, because fees and packages change.

Ask DStv about its rules for your situation. We can tell you whether the cabling is possible.

Installer guides say the primary should be an Explora. See our decoder guide.

For some viewing, yes. It depends on your internet and data.

Streaming apps may suit occasional use better than a permanent monthly fee.
