Can I Add Extra View to a Room Without Drilling Walls or Running New Cables?

By the Remtech Installers team · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer

Extra View needs a physical coax cable to each decoder, so there is no wireless version. You can often reuse existing coax in the walls, run cable through the ceiling, or use neat surface trunking instead of drilling. If cabling isn’t possible, streaming is the fallback.

Why Extra View can’t be wireless

Each Extra View decoder receives the satellite signal through its own cable from the dish’s LNB. Wi-Fi can’t carry that signal, so a wireless link isn’t an option. That is why the question is really about cable routes, not about the decoder.

Can you reuse existing coax?

Many homes already have coax cables in the walls from older aerial or DStv installations. Sometimes they can be reused for Extra View.

  • Look for coax wall plates in the rooms you want to use.
  • Have an installer test the cable with a signal meter. Old or damaged cable can look fine and still fail.
  • Check that the cable runs back to the roof or a junction you can access.
  • Expect to replace cable that is thin, corroded or damaged.

Routes that avoid drilling

  • The ceiling void, running cable above the ceiling to the second room.
  • Surface trunking along skirting, cornices or door frames.
  • Existing conduit, if there is spare capacity.
  • Outside routes that enter at a point you already have, such as an existing opening.

The best route depends on your home. An installer can walk through and suggest the cleanest one.

Send us photos of the room and the ceiling or wall access. We will tell you what is possible and quote you for free.

If you rent

  • Get your landlord’s written permission.
  • Use removable trunking and avoid damaging adhesives where possible.
  • Agree in writing who restores the wall when you move out.

In a complex or estate

A neat finish

  • Keep cable straight and clipped, not looped on the floor.
  • Use trunking in a colour that matches the wall.
  • Avoid sharp bends, which damage coax.
  • Label the cable ends so the installation is easy to fix later.

If cabling isn’t possible

Streaming is the fallback. An Apple TV or smart TV can give you apps in the second room without any satellite cable. See our Apple TV installations, and check your Wi-Fi first with our buffering guide.

Frequently asked questions

No. Extra View decoders need a cable connection from the LNB.

It is a trip hazard and gets damaged, so we avoid it. Trunking is neater and safer.

Sometimes. It has to be the right type and in good condition, and an installer should test it.

Good trunking can be fixed with minimal marks. Ask your installer what suits your walls.

Yes. Get your landlord’s written consent first.
