How Much Does a Standard Residential Satellite TV Installation Cost?

By the Remtech Installers team · Updated October 2026 · 5 min read

The short answer

In 2026, installers commonly quote about R800 to R1,500 for labour on a standard single-view DStv installation, roughly R1,000 to R2,000 for an Explora, and around R350 to R600 per extra TV point. Prices vary between installers and between sources, so use these as a guide and ask for an itemised quote for your own home.

Typical prices in 2026

JobTypical rangeWhat it usually includes
Standard single-view installationR800 to R1,500Dish mounted and aligned, cable run, decoder set up and scanned
Explora or Explora Ultra installationR1,000 to R2,000The standard job plus Smart LNB and decoder set-up
Extra View, per extra TV pointR350 to R600Extra cable run and a linked second decoder
New 80 cm dish with bracket (parts only)Roughly R300 to R600Only if a new dish is needed
Watch out
These ranges come from installer price guides published in 2026, and they don’t all agree. Some list lower starting prices and some list higher. Always check what’s included before you compare two quotes.

What changes the price

  • The decoder. Explora and Explora Ultra take longer to set up than a basic decoder.
  • The number of TVs. Every extra viewing point needs cable and a linked decoder.
  • The roof and access. Tiled roofs, double storeys and awkward walls add time.
  • Cable length and drilling. Long runs and thick walls cost more.
  • New or reused equipment. A healthy dish and bracket can be reused. A worn one can’t.

Costs people forget

  • The decoder itself, if you don’t already own one.
  • The monthly fee for an extra decoder. DStv charges for Extra View separately, so check the current amount on DStv’s website.
  • Extra cable, brackets or a new LNB if the old ones are damaged.
  • Call-out fees, which some installers add on top.

When the cheapest quote costs more

A 2024 consumer story in the Weekend Post described a household that was quoted R16,850 for a job an accredited installer said would cost R945 in total. That’s an extreme case, but it shows why a price on its own tells you very little. Ask what’s included, who’s doing the work and whether they’re accredited. Our guide to choosing an installer gives you the questions to ask.

How to read a quote

  • Is labour listed separately from parts?
  • How many metres of cable and which bracket are included?
  • Does the price include alignment and a signal test?
  • Is there a call-out fee, and is there a warranty in writing?
Good to know
Ask the installer to put the quote in a message or email. It makes comparing two or three quotes much easier.

Red flags in a quote

  • A price with no breakdown.
  • A very low price that quietly drops the cable or the alignment from the job.
  • Pressure to pay everything upfront in cash.
  • No warranty and no invoice.
  • A huge price for a simple job. If one quote is several times higher than the rest, ask why, in writing.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on where you buy. Ask the seller whether installation is included and who does it, and confirm before you pay.

Yes, DStv charges a separate monthly fee for an extra decoder on your account. Check the current amount with DStv.

Yes, once the installer knows your decoder, the number of TVs and your roof type. We give written quotes.

Usually not. Installation prices cover labour and basic fittings, and the decoder is bought separately.

Many installers quote per job rather than per hour. Ask which applies and what is included.

The biggest differences come from what each quote includes, how far the installer travels and the quality of the parts. Compare like with like.
