The short answer
Start with what you see on screen. A signal code such as E48-32 points to the dish, cable or connectors. A subscription code such as E16 or E30 points to your account. A smartcard code such as E04, E17 or E18 points to the card. A black screen with the decoder light on points to the TV input, the HDMI cable or standby. Match your symptom in the table, then open the guide.
| What you see | Likely area | Open this guide |
|---|---|---|
| A black screen or no picture | TV input, HDMI cable or standby | What the decoder lights mean |
| “No signal” or E48-32 | Dish, cable or connectors | The E48-32 guide |
| E16, E30, E14, E19 or E162-0 | Your account or package | DStv error codes |
| E04, E17 or E18 | The smartcard | DStv error codes |
| E143-4 on a second decoder | The Extra View link | Error E143-4 |
| Pixelation or freezing in rain | Rain fade, or a weak connector | Does rain affect DStv? |
| Only one TV fails | That TV’s cable run | Second TV pixelating |
| The remote does nothing | The remote or line of sight | DStv remote not working |
| Everything broke after load shedding | Restart order, surge or a corrupted drive | After a power cut |
| Freezing, reboots or not recording | The Explora and its hard drive | Explora problems |
| No signal after moving house | Alignment or a blocked view | No signal at your new home |
| Problem | Who fixes it |
|---|---|
| Subscription, package and smartcard pairing | DStv, through its self-service tools or support |
| Signal, cabling, dish and LNB | An installer |
| TV settings and HDMI | You, or whoever supplied the TV |
| Hard drive failure | DStv, or an installer for a replacement |
If the cause is signal, cabling, the dish or the LNB, call us. We repair and install across Gauteng. See our Smart LNB and Explora installations and DStv relocation.
Check the TV input and HDMI cable, then look at the decoder’s light and for an error code. See what the lights mean.
Rarely. Subscription and signal codes are not fixed by a reset. See how to reset a DStv decoder.
If every TV fails with a signal code, the dish, LNB or main cable is the usual suspect. If only one fails, look at that TV’s cable and decoder.
If the code stays after a restart and the checks above, call. Waiting rarely helps a signal fault.
