The short answer
After a power cut, give the decoder a few minutes to restart. If there is still no picture, restart it at the wall, check the smartcard, read the signal screen, and for Extra View power the main decoder on first. A surge can damage equipment, so unplug during storms and use surge protection.
When power returns, the decoder restarts, searches for the satellite and checks your subscription. During that time you may see a blank screen, an amber light, or a message such as E30 (“please wait”). Wait about five minutes before you do anything else. See error E30.
| What you see | What it usually means | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| E48-32 or no signal | A signal problem | Our E48-32 guide |
| E30 or E19 | The decoder is checking your subscription | Wait, then restart |
| E04, E17 or E18 | A smartcard problem | Reseat the smartcard. See the code list |
| E143-4 | A secondary decoder can’t find the primary | Power the primary on first. See E143-4 |
Decoders can restart in the wrong order after an outage. Switch off all of them, then power the primary decoder on first, wait for it to settle, then power on the others. If a secondary decoder still shows an error, read our Extra View error guide.
When power returns, it can arrive as a spike. Signs of damage include a decoder that won’t switch on, a burnt smell, or a signal that never comes back. Don’t keep power-cycling a damaged decoder. Read how to protect your equipment, and call an installer to test the decoder, LNB and cable.
It restarts, searches for the satellite and checks your subscription. A few minutes is normal.
It can, mainly through surges when power returns. A surge protector and unplugging during storms help.
Check the TV input and the HDMI cable, then restart the decoder.
Not usually. If channels are missing, check the signal and your subscription first.
