The short answer
Most Explora freezes are fixed by a proper restart. If it keeps rebooting, a corrupted hard drive is a common cause, and published guides link it to power failures and load shedding. The usual cure is a factory reset with a hard-drive format, which deletes all recordings, scheduled recordings and BoxOffice rentals, so try the gentler steps first and contact DStv if you are unsure.
A restart deletes nothing.
A full hard drive stops new recordings and can make the Explora sluggish. Delete recordings you have watched, and cancel series you no longer follow. If the Explora tells you the disk is full, that is the cause, not a fault.
A decoder that restarts again and again often has a damaged hard drive. A MultiChoice agent quoted in a forum thread said power failures and load shedding can corrupt the drive, and that reformatting it is the fix. That matches what many owners report. If a restart doesn’t help, the next step is the factory reset below, or a visit to DStv.
The menu path is: press the blue DStv button, go to Settings, then System Settings, then Reset Decoder Settings, then choose Reset to Factory Default and format the hard drive.

If the Explora still reboots after a reset, the drive or the decoder may need replacing. Contact DStv. We can also check the power, cable and signal side. See our Smart LNB and Explora installations.
Yes, if you choose the option that formats the hard drive. It deletes recordings, scheduled recordings and BoxOffice movies.
Reports say power failures can corrupt the hard drive. A surge protector and a careful shutdown help.
The Explora normally warns you. Check your recordings list.
Yes. A restart deletes nothing. A factory reset with a format wipes everything on the drive.
