The short answer
Extra View is worth it when several people want to watch different channels at the same time and you already have a decoder in the lounge. Light viewers may do better with streaming alone. Compare the monthly fee, installation and your data costs, and check current DStv prices, because they change.
| Option | Who it suits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Extra View | Households that want different channels in more than one room, and live sport | A monthly fee for the extra decoder, plus cabling and installation |
| A second DStv subscription | A separate household or a granny flat with its own account | You pay for a full second subscription |
| Streaming apps only | Light viewers and people with a good, uncapped internet line | Data use, the cost of several apps, and no signal when the internet or router is down |
Don’t compare monthly fees alone. Add up a full year.
Prices change, so use the current ones from DStv and your streaming providers.
Satellite keeps working when the internet doesn’t, uses no data, and carries live channels reliably. Streaming is flexible and needs no dish, but it depends on your line, your data and your router, and it stops when load shedding takes the router down. See why Apple TV buffers for what weak Wi-Fi does to streaming.
It is designed to be, but compare current prices on DStv’s website, because fees and packages change.
Ask DStv about its rules for your situation. We can tell you whether the cabling is possible.
Installer guides say the primary should be an Explora. See our decoder guide.
For some viewing, yes. It depends on your internet and data.
Streaming apps may suit occasional use better than a permanent monthly fee.
