Can I Take My DStv Dish and Decoder With Me When I Move House?

By the Remtech Installers team · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer

Yes. You can take the decoder and smartcard, and often the dish and bracket too if they are in good condition. The dish has to be re-aligned at the new home, and you should update your address with DStv. Confirm the current process on DStv’s website, then book an accredited installer.

What moves and what stays

Decoder and smartcardYesPack carefully and keep the smartcard with it
Remote, power lead and HDMI cableYesEasy to lose in a move, so pack them together
Dish and bracketOftenOnly if they are sound, and if your lease or sale agreement allows

FixingsUsually newFresh fittings give a safer mount

Move the dish or replace it?

  • Move it if the dish and bracket are in good condition and belong to you.
  • Replace it if there is rust, cracks, a loose bracket or a bent arm.
  • Check first if you rent, or if the dish is part of a sale. See approvals for a complex or rental.
  • Ask an installer when you are unsure. They can tell you at a glance whether it is worth moving.

The process, step by step

  1. Confirm the current steps with DStv and update your address.
  2. Book your installer once you know your moving date.
  3. Photograph your setup, including the back of each decoder.
  4. Have the dish removed at the old home, or leave it if agreed.
  5. Pack the decoder and smartcard with the remote and cables.
  6. Book the installation at the new home, with the dish mounted and aligned and every TV tested.

Move or replace: thinking about cost

Moving a good dish can save you the price of a new one, but the labour is similar. If the old dish needs a new bracket or LNB, replacing can cost about the same. Our cost guide shows typical ranges, and we give free quotes.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the booking until moving day.
  • Throwing out brackets and cable before they are checked.
  • Forgetting to update your DStv address.
  • Not checking the rules in a complex or estate.
  • Trusting an unverified installer. See how to choose one.
