Should I Take Down My Old DStv Dish or Leave It? Selling, Renting and Moving Out

By the Remtech Installers team · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer

Check your sale or lease agreement first, because a dish may count as a fixture that stays with the property. If you remove it, have the holes sealed so the roof or wall doesn’t leak. If you leave it, tell the buyer or landlord, because the dish will need re-aligning for their decoder. This isn’t legal advice.

Check the agreement

A dish bolted to the roof may be treated as a fixture rather than something you can take. Read the sale agreement or lease, and ask your agent or attorney if you aren’t sure. Put whatever you decide in writing.

Renting

  • Ask your landlord whether the dish is theirs or yours.
  • Don’t remove it without agreement.
  • If you installed it, agree who restores the wall or roof.
  • Check your deposit terms.

Removing it safely and sealing the holes

  1. Use an installer for roof and height work.
  2. Take the dish and LNB down together.
  3. Seal the holes so no water gets in.
  4. Tidy the cable and fix any damage.
  5. Photograph the finished area for your records.

Need the dish removed neatly?

We can remove it, seal the holes and reinstall it at your new home. Tell us your date for a free quote.

If you leave it for the buyer

A buyer’s decoder may need a different LNB, and the dish will need re-aligning. Tell them the dish is old if it is. A dish in poor condition can be a cost, not a bonus. See taking your dish and decoder with you.

Reusing the bracket

If the bracket is in good condition it can often be reused. Check it for rust and a firm mount before you move it.
