Explora vs Explora Ultra: Which DStv Decoder Should I Buy?

By the Remtech Installers team · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer

Choose the Explora Ultra if you want 4K and the newest features, and an Explora if recording and multi-room viewing are enough. Either way, your dish, LNB and cabling must suit the decoder. DStv changes models and prices, so check its website for current specs, then have an installer check your dish.

What to compare

Specs and prices change, so use this as a checklist and fill in the details from DStv’s website.

QuestionWhy it matters
Do I want 4K?The Explora Ultra supports 4K, according to DStv. You also need a 4K TV.
How much do I record?Check the storage and recording features of each model.
How many rooms? Both can be part of a multi-room setup. See our Extra View guide.
What is the price now?Check DStv for current prices and offers.
Is my dish and LNB suitable?Installer guides say Explora setups usually need a Smart LNB.

What the dish and LNB must support

An Explora needs more from the signal than a basic decoder. DStv recommends a Smart LNB for all Explora installations in single dwellings, and installer guides commonly mention an 80 cm dish. Read what a Smart LNB is before you buy, and have an installer confirm your own dish.

Not sure which decoder suits you?

Tell us what you watch and what you have. We will check your dish and recommend what makes sense.

Do you have a 4K TV?

A 4K decoder only helps if your TV can show 4K and your HDMI cable is up to the job. If you aren’t going to buy a 4K TV soon, the Explora Ultra’s main advantage doesn’t apply yet. See our premium equipment checklist.

Internet and features

Some features need an internet connection. Live satellite channels don’t. Check which features you care about, and whether your router is on backup power. See why Wi-Fi at the TV matters.

Upgrading without replacing the dish

Often a sound dish can take a new decoder, if the LNB and cabling suit it. The installer checks the dish, LNB, cable and connectors before the upgrade. If the LNB is old or damaged, replacing it is part of the job.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • What does DStv currently list for each model?
  • Does my dish and LNB support it?
  • Is my cabling good enough?
  • Will it work with Extra View in my home?
  • Do I need a new TV to benefit?
