The short answer
For a premium setup, plan for a current decoder such as an Explora, a Smart LNB if you want multi-room viewing, good-quality cabling, a stable internet connection for apps and on-demand, and a TV and HDMI cable that can handle 4K if you want it. Check current decoder specs and prices on DStv’s website, because they change.
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Explora or Explora Ultra decoder | Recording, a larger library and, with the Ultra, 4K support. Check DStv’s site for current models. |
| Smart LNB | Lets compatible decoders share one dish for multi-room viewing. |
| Quality coaxial cable and connectors | Old or damaged cable causes signal drops that look like dish problems. |
| A correctly aligned dish and solid mount | Everything else depends on a strong, stable signal. |
If you want the same subscription on more than one TV, you’ll need a second decoder, the right LNB and cable to each room. We explain how it works on our Extra View page and our Smart LNB and Explora page.
Live satellite channels don’t need internet. Apps, on-demand and some decoder features do. A wired network cable to the decoder is usually more reliable than Wi-Fi, so think about where your router sits before the installer arrives.
If you also stream with an Apple TV, we can set it up alongside your DStv. See our Apple TV installations.
If you record a lot, want 4K or watch in several rooms, yes. If you only watch live TV on one screen, a simpler decoder may be enough.
Not for live satellite channels. You do need one for apps, on-demand and some decoder features.
Usually, as long as your dish, LNB and cabling support it. We check on site.
Sometimes. Old or damaged cable can cause signal drops, so we test it and replace it if needed.
