The short answer
Plug the Apple TV and the decoder into separate HDMI inputs on the TV, then send the sound to the soundbar from the TV’s ARC or eARC port. Mount the TV at about seated eye level, leave room around the boxes for ventilation, and hide the cables in trunking or in the wall.
This keeps the wiring simple and lets the TV switch between sources.
ARC sends sound from the TV to the soundbar over HDMI. eARC is the newer version, which carries higher-quality audio. If your TV or soundbar lacks ARC, an optical cable is the fallback, with some limits on audio formats.
HDMI-CEC lets devices control each other, which is handy but can cause clashes, such as the TV switching inputs on its own. If that happens, turn CEC off on one device at a time. See Apple TV black screen fixes.
We mount TVs and hide cables as part of our Apple TV installations, including Sandton, Randburg, Bedfordview and Centurion.
For a satellite decoder and an Explora, see using both on one TV and our premium equipment checklist.
