The short answer
Try a different HDMI port and cable first, then reset the video mode, because a mismatched 4K or HDR setting is a common cause. HDMI-CEC clashes with a decoder or soundbar can also blank the picture. If it works on another TV, the original TV’s port or settings are at fault.
A picture mode your TV can’t handle can leave a black screen. Apple’s support site describes a button combination on the remote that resets the video mode. Search for “Apple TV resolution reset” with your remote model, because the combination differs between remotes. Then pick a mode your TV supports, and match 4K and HDR settings to it.
HDMI-CEC lets devices control each other. When it misbehaves, a TV can switch inputs on its own, or a decoder and Apple TV can fight for control. Turn CEC off on the TV or devices one at a time to find the culprit. Names for the setting differ between TV brands.
If the Apple TV connects through a soundbar or receiver, the problem may be in the middle. Test by connecting the Apple TV straight to the TV. If the picture returns, check the soundbar’s HDMI ports, its passthrough settings and the ARC or eARC port on the TV.
If you want it set up properly with a soundbar and a wall-mounted TV, see our Apple TV installations, including Randburg, Fourways and Roodepoort. Our premium equipment checklist covers cables and TVs.

Use a high-speed HDMI cable that suits your TV. A poor cable is a common cause of a black screen.
HDMI-CEC or passthrough settings may be switching inputs. Test with the Apple TV connected directly to the TV.
Only as a last resort. Try the cable, port and video mode first.
