The short answer
On many DStv decoders, a solid green light means the decoder is tuned to a channel, solid red means standby, amber means it is downloading software, and a combination of red and green or a flashing red means an error. Light patterns differ between models, so check your decoder’s manual too.
DStv’s quick guides for its HD decoders describe the front-panel light like this. Newer models, including the Explora, may behave differently.
| What you see | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Solid green | The decoder is on and tuned to an audio or video channel |
| A green blink | The decoder has received a command from the remote |
| Solid red | The decoder is in standby |
| Solid amber | The decoder is downloading software |
| Red and green together, or flashing red | An error. Check the screen for a code |
The remote has a small light too. When you press a button, it should blink green. If it doesn’t blink, the batteries are probably flat or the remote is faulty. Some DStv remotes also use a red light to show which mode they are in, so a red blink can mean the remote is set to control something other than your decoder. Check the manual for your remote.
After load shedding, a decoder can take a few minutes to start and may show an amber light while it updates. Give it time before you reset it. See DStv not working after a power cut.
If the decoder won’t switch on, stays red, or the light patterns don’t match anything in your manual, contact DStv or an installer. We repair and replace decoders as part of our Smart LNB and Explora installations.
Red usually means standby or an error. Press standby on the remote, then check the screen for a code.
On many decoders it means a software download. Leave it alone until it finishes.
The batteries may be flat, or the remote may be faulty. Try new batteries first.
No. Models differ, so check the manual for yours.
