DStv Error E04: What It Means and How to Fix It

By the Remtech Installers team · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer

The decoder can’t find a smartcard. The message reads “Please insert smartcard.” Work through the steps below, and confirm current details with DStv, because decoder models and software differ.

What error E04 means

The decoder can’t find a smartcard. The message reads “Please insert smartcard.”

Error codes are DStv’s way of telling you whether the problem is signal, subscription, smartcard or Extra View linking. E04 falls under smartcard. See our full DStv error code list to compare.

Common causes of E04

  • The card isn’t in the slot.
  • The card is in the wrong way round or not pushed in fully.
  • The card is dirty, or the slot has dust in it.

How to fix E04, step by step

  1. Switch the decoder off.
  2. Remove the card and wipe it gently with a dry cloth.
  3. Reinsert it fully the way your decoder shows. On many decoders the chip faces down with the arrow pointing in.
  4. Switch the decoder on and wait a few minutes.
  5. Visit a DStv centre or contact DStv if the message returns.
Watch out
Don’t climb onto the roof to chase an error code. Most codes are not caused by the dish. Check the decoder, smartcard and payment first.

Clearing codes with DStv self-service

DStv’s own self-service tools, which include the MyDStv website and app, can clear many subscription and smartcard codes. The exact steps change, so use DStv’s official website and support channels. Never give your login details, PINs or one-time passwords to anyone who contacts you.

When to call an installer or DStv

Smartcard codes are handled by DStv, but an installer can check the decoder, cabling and power. If your decoder also shows a signal code, read the E48-32 guide.
