Can I Watch DStv on Apple TV, and Do I Still Need a Decoder?

By the Remtech Installers team · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer

DStv offers a streaming app, so check whether it is available for your Apple TV model and which channels your package includes. A decoder still wins on satellite reliability, recording and live sport when the internet or power is unreliable. Many households use both.

Features and packages change, so check DStv’s website for what applies to your account.

Is the DStv app on Apple TV?

Check DStv’s website or the App Store on your Apple TV for the current app and the supported models. Availability, channels and the number of devices you can use at once depend on your package and can change.

Using both on one TV

  • Connect the decoder and Apple TV to separate HDMI inputs, or run them through a soundbar or receiver.
  • Use the TV’s input button to switch, or set up a universal remote.
  • Watch for HDMI-CEC clashes that turn devices on and off unexpectedly.
  • Keep ventilation around both boxes.

Data and speed

Streaming live TV uses data every hour you watch. On a capped line, that adds up quickly. Weak Wi-Fi also causes buffering. Read why Apple TV buffers before relying on it.

Who should keep a decoder

  • People who record a lot.
  • Households that watch live sport and want reliability.
  • Anyone on a capped or unreliable internet line.
  • Homes with more than one TV and a good satellite setup.

Who can go streaming only

  • Light viewers with an uncapped, reliable line.
  • People who mostly watch on-demand shows.
  • Anyone who can’t put up a dish, for example in a complex that doesn’t allow one. See our guide to approvals.
