What Equipment Do You Need for a Standard Satellite TV Installation at Home?

By the Remtech Installers team · Updated October 2026 · 5 min read

The short answer

A standard DStv setup needs a dish and bracket, an LNB, coaxial cable with connectors, a decoder with its remote, and an HDMI cable to your TV. Your installer brings the tools and the signal meter. Before they arrive, make sure you have a TV with an HDMI port and a working power point close to it.

The standard checklist

Here’s everything that goes into a normal single-TV installation, and who usually supplies each item.

ItemWhat it doesUsually supplied by
Satellite dish and bracketCatches the signal from the satellite. Most homes use a dish of around 80 cm, and your installer will confirm the right size.Installer
LNBSits on the dish arm and receives the signal. Multi-room setups use a Smart LNB.Installer
Coaxial cable (RG6) and F-connectorsCarries the signal from the dish to your decoder.Installer
Decoder and remoteTurns the signal into channels. For example an HD PVR or an Explora. You, or the seller

What the installer brings

You don’t need to own any of this, but it helps to know why a professional visit takes the time it does.

  • A signal meter, so the dish is aligned precisely rather than by eye.
  • A drill and masonry bits, spanners and ladders.
  • Cable clips, sealant and weatherproofing so the job lasts through summer storms.
Good to know
The signal meter is the real difference. A dish that looks right can still be slightly off, and that’s when pictures break up in heavy rain.

Not sure what you already have?

Tell us what is on your roof and what decoder you own. We will tell you what is needed and quote you for free.

Where the dish goes

The dish needs a clear line of sight to the satellite. Trees, walls and neighbouring buildings can all block it, and the right spot isn’t always the one that looks neatest. Your installer will check the options on the day and explain the trade-offs between a roof mount and a wall mount.

Extras that make for a better setup

Think about these before the installer arrives, because it’s far easier to add them during the visit.

  • A second viewing point. See our Extra View installations.
  • A wall-mounted TV. Cables are hidden and the room looks tidier.
  • A surge protector for the decoder and TV.
  • A Wi-Fi or network connection for apps and on-demand features.

Get ready before the installer arrives

  • Know which rooms you want a TV in.
  • Clear a path to the TV and to the roof or wall where the dish will go.
  • Have the decoder and remote ready, and the TV’s HDMI port free.
  • Check your complex or landlord rules about fitting a dish.

Simple maintenance

  • Keep trees trimmed back from the dish’s line of sight.
  • Look over the cable and connectors for wear after storms (from the ground, not the roof).
  • Keep the decoder ventilated and away from heat.
  • Use a surge protector on the decoder and TV.

Frequently asked questions

Not always. If you already have a dish in good condition we can often reuse it. We check it on the day.

If your decoder is old, or it doesn’t support what you want (like recording or 4K), upgrading helps. The installer can advise.

Installers normally include a standard length. Ask how many metres are in the quote so there are no surprises.

Almost any TV with an HDMI port does. Older TVs may need a different cable, so tell us what you have.

It depends on the weather, the quality of the parts and how well it was installed. A well-fitted dish and good cable can last for years, but connectors and LNBs can wear out.

Ask your installer before you buy. They can tell you what suits your setup and help you avoid the wrong LNB or cable.
