Why Does My Second TV Pixelate in the Rain When the Main TV Doesn’t?

By the Remtech Installers team · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer

When only one TV pixelates in the rain, look at the cable run feeding that TV. A poor connector, water getting into a join, a damaged cable or a long run of low-quality cable fails first in wet weather. A dish that is slightly off normally affects every TV.

Why only one TV is affected

Each decoder in an Extra View setup has its own cable run. The main TV may use a short, healthy run, while the second TV uses a longer one with more joins. Wet weather exposes weak points in the second run first. If every TV fails together, the problem is more likely the dish or the LNB. See our E48-32 guide.

Connector faults and water ingress

  • Loose F-connectors that move when you touch them.
  • Unsealed outdoor joins, where water creeps into the cable.
  • Corroded connectors, often green or white around the metal.
  • Connectors that were crimped badly and never gripped the cable.

Cable quality and length

Poor cable loses signal along the run, and a long run makes it worse. Ask your installer to use proper RG6 coaxial cable with a solid copper centre. Cheaper cable with a copper coating over aluminium can corrode and perform worse over time. Keep runs as short and direct as the layout allows.

Splitters and joins to avoid

  • Unneeded splitters, which weaken the signal.
  • Joins taped together instead of properly connected.
  • Cable lengths spliced with twist-on connectors.
  • Outdoor joins without weatherproofing.

Safe checks from the ground

  1. Look at the connectors at the second decoder and wall plate. They should be firm and clean.
  2. Follow the cable you can see for cuts, kinks and sun damage.
  3. Check the signal screen on both decoders. A much weaker reading on the second one points to its cable run.
  4. Swap the cables at the decoder end, if you can reach them safely, to see whether the problem follows the cable.
Watch out
Don’t go onto the roof or climb a wet ladder to check an outdoor join. Call an installer.

Second TV still breaking up?

Tell us what the signal screen says on each decoder. We will tell you the likely cause and quote you for a fix.

What a proper fix looks like

  • Replace faulty connectors with new compression connectors.
  • Weatherproof every outdoor join.
  • Replace a damaged section or the whole run if the cable is poor.
  • Remove splitters you don’t need.
  • Test every decoder before finishing.

Tape is only a temporary patch. Moisture usually gets back in.

Frequently asked questions

Water in a damaged connector or cable changes how the signal travels, so faults show up when it is wet.

If every TV fails together, it is more likely the dish or the LNB.

Only temporarily. Have the connectors replaced and sealed properly.

It can, especially with poor cable, because the signal weakens along the run.

A connector is usually cheaper than a new cable run. Ask for a quote, and see our cost guide.
