The short answer
Usually the second decoder has lost its link to the main one, has a fault on its own cable run, or is showing a subscription code (E16 or E30) that needs clearing. Power-cycle both decoders, check the connectors and give them a few minutes. If the error returns, an accredited installer should check the link and the cable.
Extra View lets more than one decoder run on a single DStv account. One decoder is the primary and the others are secondary. Each decoder needs its own signal path from the LNB, and the secondary ones also depend on their link to the primary.
That is why one decoder can work perfectly while another shows an error. They share an account, but they don’t share every point of failure.
| What you see | Usually means | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| E48-32 | A signal problem on that decoder’s path | Check its connectors and cable run, then the dish if every decoder fails |
| E16 | A subscription or authorisation message | Try DStv’s self-service options, and give the decoder a few minutes after payment |
| E30 | The decoder is confirming your service | Wait a few minutes without pressing buttons, then clear it through self-service if it stays |
| Secondary only shows an access error | The secondary may have lost its link or authorisation | Power-cycle both, then ask an installer to check the link |
Code behaviour can differ between models, so confirm the current steps with DStv.
Older Extra View setups used a heartbeat cable and a diplexer to link decoders. Installer guides report that newer Smart LNB setups may not need a physical heartbeat cable. Because the details depend on your decoder models, we check the exact setup on site rather than guess.
Linking and activating a decoder on your account is done through DStv, usually by an accredited installer. If you swapped a decoder or moved house, the link may need to be re-registered.
Power returning after load shedding can trip or confuse decoders, and storms can damage equipment. A surge protector on each decoder, and a full power-cycle after a long outage, solves more problems than people expect.
We cover Extra View installations across Gauteng, including Sandton, Midrand and Pretoria East. Most Extra View setups also depend on the right LNB, so see our Smart LNB and Explora page.

DStv charges a separate monthly fee for an extra decoder on your account. Check the current amount with DStv.
It can take a few minutes for authorisation to reach every decoder. If it persists, try DStv’s self-service options or call DStv, and ask your installer to check the link.
Not just by carrying it. It needs a cable run from the LNB to the new room and a signal check. See our Extra View installations.
Only if the LNB is the cause. DStv recommends the Smart LNB for most Extra View installations in single dwellings, but it won’t fix a bad connector or an unlinked decoder.
