Can I Install a Satellite TV Dish Myself, and What Tools Would I Need?

By the Remtech Installers team · Updated October 2026 · 4 min read

The short answer

Yes, it’s possible, and plenty of handy people manage it. The tools are ordinary: a drill, spanners, a ladder, a satellite finder and some cable. The tricky parts are aiming the dish precisely and working safely at height. If you’re not comfortable on a ladder, or you want a warranty, call an installer.

Tools and materials you would need

  • A drill and masonry bits, plus spanners and screwdrivers.
  • A sturdy ladder, and a helper to hold it.
  • A satellite finder or signal meter, and a compass or phone app to point you the right way.
  • Coaxial cable (RG6), F-connectors and a cable cutter and connector tool.
  • Cable clips and sealant to weatherproof the connections.
  • The dish, LNB and bracket that suit your decoder.

The steps in plain English

  1. Pick the spot. It needs a clear view of the sky towards the satellite, with no trees or walls in the way.
  2. Mount the bracket solidly. A wobbly mount ruins the alignment later.
  3. Assemble the dish and fit the LNB.
  4. Run the cable from the dish to your TV point and clip it neatly.
  5. Connect the meter between the LNB and the cable.
  6. Aim slowly, a little at a time, until the meter peaks.
  7. Lock the bolts without moving the dish.
  8. Connect the decoder, check the signal quality on screen and test a few channels.
  9. Seal the connectors and tidy the cable.

The risks nobody mentions

  • Falls. Ladders and roofs cause real injuries.
  • Power lines. Keep well away from overhead lines.
  • Leaks. A badly sealed hole in the roof or wall causes damp later.
  • Weak signal in bad weather. A dish that is slightly off works fine until it rains.
  • The wrong LNB for your decoder, which costs time and money to swap.
Watch out
Never work near overhead power lines, and never climb onto a wet roof. If in doubt, stop and call a professional.

A middle path

You don’t have to choose all or nothing. Many people let a professional mount and align the dish, then handle the indoor work themselves, such as connecting the TV and tidying the decoder setup. It keeps the risky part in expert hands and still saves a little.

When to call a professional

  • You have a tiled or double-storey roof.
  • You want Extra View or multi-room viewing. See Extra View installations.
  • You need a Smart LNB or Explora setup.
  • You live in an apartment, complex or estate with rules to follow.
  • You are moving house. Our DStv relocation service handles removal and reinstallation.

Safety checklist before you climb

  • Check for overhead power lines and stay well clear.
  • Never work on a wet or windy day.
  • Use a ladder that is long enough, on firm ground, with someone holding it.
  • Wear shoes with good grip.
  • Don’t work on a roof alone.

Frequently asked questions

Generally yes, but check your lease, body corporate or estate rules first. Some require approval before you fit anything.

Support can help with account and decoder questions. A weak signal often traces back to alignment, though, and that has to be fixed at the dish.

Allow a few hours if it’s your first time, longer if you’re hunting for the signal.

It’s harder, because it involves extra cabling and the right LNB. We recommend a professional for multi-room setups.

Check the cable and connectors, then recheck the alignment slowly. If you still can’t get a signal, stop and call an installer rather than loosening things at random.

Sometimes, if the dish and bracket are sound and the LNB suits your decoder. Rust, cracks and a loose bracket are reasons to replace them.
