Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter or Wi-Fi: Which Smart-Home Standard Should I Choose?

By the Remtech Installers team · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer

For most homes, a hub-based mesh (Zigbee or Thread) gives the best reliability and keeps working locally without the internet. Wi-Fi-only devices are the simplest to start with but crowd your network and often depend on the cloud. Matter is a newer standard that aims to make devices work together, so check what a device supports before you buy.

Standards and support change quickly. Check each product’s specifications.

The Wi-Fi problem

Every Wi-Fi smart device uses a connection on your router, and routers have limits. Add enough bulbs and plugs and you get dropouts. See why smart lights go offline.

What Matter changes

Matter aims to let devices from different brands work together, and to work locally where possible. It does not magically fix an overloaded Wi-Fi network, and support varies by device. Ask what keeps working with the internet off.

Load shedding and your choice

Whatever you choose, back up the router and the hub. Read keeping a smart home working during load shedding.

A sensible starter setup

  1. Choose a hub that runs automations locally.
  2. Back up the hub and router on a small UPS.
  3. Start with a few lights and plugs.
  4. Add sensors and switches.
  5. Check what works with the internet off.

Frequently asked questions

For many devices, yes. It uses a low-power mesh and avoids crowding your router.

For Zigbee, Z-Wave and Thread, yes. Wi-Fi devices connect straight to the router.

It is meant to work alongside them. Support is still growing.

Often, with a hub that supports more than one. Ask before you buy.
