The short answer
For most homes, a hub-based mesh (Zigbee or Thread) gives the best reliability and keeps working locally without the internet. Wi-Fi-only devices are the simplest to start with but crowd your network and often depend on the cloud. Matter is a newer standard that aims to make devices work together, so check what a device supports before you buy.
| Zigbee | Z-Wave | Thread and Matter | Wi-Fi | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How it connects | A low-power mesh to a hub | A low-power mesh to a hub | Thread is a low-power mesh. Matter is a common language that can run over Thread, Wi-Fi or Ethernet | Straight to your router |
| Works without internet | Usually, with a local hub | Usually, with a local hub | Often, depending on the device and hub | Often needs the cloud |
| Load shedding | Good, if the hub is on backup power | Good, if the hub is on backup power | Depends on the setup | Needs the router on backup power |
| Number of devices | Large systems work well | Large systems work well | Growing | Limited by the router |
| Watch out for | Choose a reliable hub | Buy devices sold for South Africa | Check support on each device | Network congestion |
Standards and support change quickly. Check each product’s specifications.
Every Wi-Fi smart device uses a connection on your router, and routers have limits. Add enough bulbs and plugs and you get dropouts. See why smart lights go offline.
Matter aims to let devices from different brands work together, and to work locally where possible. It does not magically fix an overloaded Wi-Fi network, and support varies by device. Ask what keeps working with the internet off.
Whatever you choose, back up the router and the hub. Read keeping a smart home working during load shedding.
For many devices, yes. It uses a low-power mesh and avoids crowding your router.
For Zigbee, Z-Wave and Thread, yes. Wi-Fi devices connect straight to the router.
It is meant to work alongside them. Support is still growing.
Often, with a hub that supports more than one. Ask before you buy.
