DStv Error E16: What It Means and How to Fix It

By the Remtech Installers team · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer

The channel you picked is scrambled for your decoder, which usually means your subscription has lapsed or the channel isn’t in your package. Work through the steps below, and confirm current details with DStv, because decoder models and software differ.

What error E16 means

The channel you picked is scrambled for your decoder, which usually means your subscription has lapsed or the channel isn’t in your package.

Error codes are DStv’s way of telling you whether the problem is signal, subscription, smartcard or Extra View linking. E16 falls under subscription. See our full DStv error code list to compare.

Common causes of E16

  • Your subscription has expired or a payment hasn’t been processed yet.
  • The channel belongs to a higher package than the one you have.
  • The decoder hasn’t picked up a recent payment or package change yet.

How to fix E16, step by step

  1. Check your account. Confirm that your payment went through and that the channel is in your package.
  2. Wait a few minutes after paying, then switch to another channel and back.
  3. Restart the decoder: off at the wall for 30 seconds, then on.
  4. Clear the code through DStv’s self-service tools.
  5. Contact DStv if it persists, with your smartcard number to hand.
Watch out
Don’t climb onto the roof to chase an error code. Most codes are not caused by the dish. Check the decoder, smartcard and payment first.

Clearing codes with DStv self-service

DStv’s own self-service tools, which include the MyDStv website and app, can clear many subscription and smartcard codes. The exact steps change, so use DStv’s official website and support channels. Never give your login details, PINs or one-time passwords to anyone who contacts you.

When to call an installer or DStv

If the code stays after payment, a restart and the self-service tools, contact DStv. Installers fix signal and cabling problems, not accounts. If you also see a signal error, read the E48-32 guide and have an installer check the dish and cable.

Frequently asked questions

No. E16 is a subscription message. A signal fault shows a different code, such as E48-32.

Payments can take a few minutes to reach your decoder. Switch channels, restart the decoder and try again before you contact DStv.

Channels outside your package show a scrambled message even while the rest of your channels work.

Often yes. Work through the steps above, and use DStv’s self-service tools. If it keeps returning, contact DStv or an installer.
