The short answer
Most remote-viewing failures come from the network, not the cameras. The usual causes are the recorder being offline, a router change or power cut, an internet line that doesn’t allow incoming connections (CGNAT), weak upload speed, or an outdated app. Check that the recorder shows as online first, then work through the steps below.
There are two common methods, and knowing which yours uses saves hours.
| Method | How it works | Needs |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud or relay service | The recorder connects out to the manufacturer’s server, and your phone connects to the same server | A working internet connection and an active service |
| Port forwarding | You open a path through your router so the app connects directly to the recorder | A router that allows it, and an internet line with its own public address |
Some internet providers share one public address among many customers. This is called CGNAT, and it can make port forwarding impossible because your router never gets its own public address. It is more common on mobile (LTE and 5G) and some wireless or fibre accounts.
Watching your cameras remotely uses your connection’s upload speed, which is often much lower than the download speed. A high-resolution stream can stutter or fail on a slow upload.
When the power returns, the router, fibre box and recorder all restart. If the recorder starts first, it may not get a network address and stay offline.
Call if the recorder shows online but the app still won’t connect, if you are behind CGNAT and want a secure alternative, or after a router change. We install and fix CCTV systems across Gauteng, including Sandton, Fourways, Bedfordview and Boksburg.
That points to a remote-access problem, such as CGNAT, a closed port or a cloud service that isn’t connected.
Not if your recorder uses a cloud or relay service. You may want one if you rely on port forwarding.
Low upload speed or a high-resolution stream. Switch the app to the lower-resolution sub-stream.
It can expose your recorder to the internet, so use strong passwords and keep the firmware updated. A relay service is often simpler and safer.
It can. Port forwards and fixed addresses are lost when you change routers, so set them up again.
